Deliberate Practice

This blog follows my progress through acquiring the sounds of Arabic. As a first language English speaker, I find it difficult to produce many of the sounds found in Arabic. So the purpose of this project was to focus on specific aspects of Arabic pronunciation to help wrap my brain (and tongue) around these new sounds. Throughout this 10-week project, I focus on memorizing, pronouncing, and writing and Arabic alphabet.

It's been weird to work on something this focused for this long--not just learning a language over a semester, but just focusing on the alphabet of that language! I wish I could say that at the end, I am fluent and speak it with ease and mastery, but the reality is, it slips in and out of my head still. A little frustrating!

Looking at my progress over the weeks, though, I can definitely see, hear, and feel a difference. Even if I still have to occasionally glance and check that I have the letters in the right order, I know them all. And even if I have to sometimes confirm that the writing is correct, the movements and connections are so much stronger.

The next hurdle in the Arabic alphabet is learning the different letters that are used. I was only learning one set (kind of like just learning lowercase), but there are two more versions of each letter that I have to master! It feels like climbing a mountain...only to discover that there's a whole range ahead of you!
